Firefighters tackle an early morning blaze at disused Bankhead Academy in Aberdeen

Dozens of firefighters have brought a major a blaze at a former secondary school in Aberdeen under control.

The fire at the disused Bankhead Academy was reported shortly before 05:00.

Eight fire appliances were at the scene and smoke drifted across the nearby A96 trunk road, affecting rush hour traffic.

The cause of the fire is not yet known but it is being treated as suspicious.

More than 50 emergency calls were received.

Head of Aberdeen city command with Grampian Fire and Rescue Service Garry Burnett said: "The fire had a good hold and was spreading quickly when crews arrived.

"The fire has been brought under control. The effort now is in getting it fully extinguished.

"When that's done we'll work with Grampian Police in a joint investigation of the cause.

"Right now, we're treating the cause as suspicious but we'll know more when the investigation begins."
