New Orkney Islands Council convener named as Steven Heddle

The new convener of Orkney Islands Council has been named as Steven Heddle.

The Kirkwall councillor won by a narrow margin, beating former convener Stephen Hagan by 11 votes to 10.

Mr Heddle, 47, is a former IT specialist with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and was previously chair of the authority's education committee.

He said he was looking forward to the challenges ahead.

The new vice convener is Jim Foubister, who was also elected by a single vote.
