Review call over Aberdeen rape trial being dropped

A judge has called for a review after the case against a man accused of rape in Aberdeen was dropped shortly before the trial started.

Kabir Ali, 34, was due to stand trial over claims he raped a woman in February last year.

He was told he was free to leave while at the High Court in Aberdeen.

Lord Uist told the jury that it was "most unusual" that the Crown had decided to abandon the trial at such a late stage.

The judge said: "The case should now be looked at by the lord advocate."

'Deported immediately'

Bangladeshi national Mr Ali had faced a further charge of living in the UK illegally for eight years.

A UK Border Agency spokesman later said Mr Ali would be deported immediately.

He said: "This individual has no right to remain in the UK.

"Steps are being taken to remove him from the UK immediately."
