A man was taken to hospital with extensive burns following what police said was a "suspicious" fire in Moray.
Four other people were treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation following the incident in the Kingsmills area of Elgin.
Grampian Fire and Rescue Service crews were called to the flat, one of a block of four, at about 19:20 on Monday after a 999 call.
The man with burns, in his 60s, was taken to Dr Gray's Hospital in Elgin.
He was later transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.
Grampian Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw a man in dark clothing in the area shortly before the fire.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the residents.
Police and the fire service are carrying out an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
