Boxer's brother jailed for attack in Inverness

The older brother of British heavyweight title boxer Gary Cornish has been jailed for 27 months for an attack on another man in Inverness.

Craig Cornish, 30, admitted on indictment to repeatedly punching, kicking and stamping on Liam Ross, 18.

The former amateur boxer also admitted to robbing Mr Ross of a mobile phone, bank cards and cash on 11 March.

Sheriff Margaret Neilson praised the actions of two men who restrained Cornish.

The sheriff said that there was "not an excuse for a violent assault".

Cornish had been in custody since the assault and was originally charged with attempted murder.

However, fiscal depute Roderick Urquhart told the sheriff that the injuries were not as serious as first thought.
