The owners of the biggest shopping centre in the Highlands plan to extend the site to include an eight-screen cinema and restaurants.

F&C Reit has proposed adding a new level to the Eastgate Shopping Centre in Inverness and extending it into Falcon Square.

The company said the project could create 120 new jobs. About 800 people are already employed at the centre.

The mall covers a 320,000sq ft (29,750 sq m) area in the city centre.

F&C Reit took over the Eastgate and two centres in England in a £250m deal last year.

Asset manager Spencer Gower said the business was seeking to adapt to new shopping trends.

He said: "The face of shopping centres are changing.

"With so many people shopping online it is important that centres have a fusion of retail and leisure to attract customers.

"The visitor experience is becoming more and more important particularly in Inverness where tourism is so important."

Inverness currently has two cinema venues - Eden Court on the riverside and a multiplex Vue Cinema at Inverness Retail Park.
