Highland Council to re-examine service points closures

Highland Council has agreed to look again at levels of usage at some of the 23 service points it plans to shut.

The sites allow the public to get face-to-face advice on council services.

The council has proposed closing 23 of its 35 offices, including in remote locations such as Durness, Acharachle and Gairloch.

Council leader and SNP councillor Drew Hendry said the local authority was listening to public concerns about some of the closures.

Independent councillor Carolyn Wilson said she hoped the move would be more than a public relations exercise.

Critics of the cuts said older people who have no computer access would be badly affected by the loss of their nearest service point.

Highland Council said there has been a fall in demand at service points.

It also said that almost a third of customers wanted to be able to access services online.
