A 60 day public consultation on a controversial plan to open the first pharmacy on Benbecula in the Western Isles has started.
Local Pharmacies Limited has applied to NHS Western Isles to open a chemist shop in Balivanich.
Medication is currently dispensed by GP surgeries, which are given funding to do so. They have opposed the application.
Local Pharmacies Limited said it had identified public support for its plan.
NHS Western Isles said that details of the consultation have been published online.
Following the consultation, there will be a meeting of the pharmacy practices committee to take a decision on the application.
The GP-led service would end if a pharmacist opened and opponents to the pharmacy have said that some people will have to make 60-mile round trips to collect prescriptions.
