£30,000 needed for Loch Ness lighthouse restoration

Bona Lighthouse The lighthouse was built to serve the Caledonian Canal

A fund to raise money for the restoration of a small historic lighthouse at Loch Ness is £30,000 short of its target.

Scottish Canals and national heritage company Vivat Trust announced a plan three years ago to conserve Bona Lighthouse.

So far £300,000 has been raised towards the project.

Built in the 1800s to serve the Caledonian Canal, it will eventually be opened as a holiday cottage.

The building was at one time the smallest manned lighthouse in Britain.

It was believed to have been constructed to a design drawn by a superintendent of famous engineer Thomas Telford.

Iain Fraser, of Vivat Trust, said the lighthouse was in a poor condition.

He said: "It has water coming in at various places and part of the roof is in disrepair."

Mark Smith from Scottish Canals said it was hoped to make the building available to the public by holding open days.
