Flu shuts Raigmore Hospital surgical ward

A ward at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness has been closed temporarily to new admissions and visitors while staff deal with several cases of flu.

NHS Highland said surgical ward 5A was closed on Monday after 10 patients were confirmed as having the flu.

The symptoms include fever, shivering, headache and aching muscles.

Consultant microbiologist Dr Adam Brown said it was likely the illness was brought into the hospital and efforts were being made stop it from spreading.

He said: "As well as restricting visiting to the affected ward we are also asking people not to come to the hospital to visit if they have had flu until at least seven days after the onset of symptoms.

"Hospital staff will of course be very happy to talk to visitors on the phone so they can get updates on how their relatives are."
