One walker found dead on Cairngorms as five others rescued

An RAF helicopter flew the five hillwalkers off the mountain

One walker has been found dead after five companions were airlifted to safety from the Cairngorms.

More than 100 rescuers were involved in the search for the party from Leeds, which was launched on Sunday night after they were reported overdue.

The five walkers were landed at Rothiemurchus near Aviemore and driven away in an ambulance.

An RAF Lossiemouth helicopter and search and rescue dogs were involved in the operation.

The five, who are unhurt, were located on a hill near Carn Tarsuinn in the Cairngorms by Braemar Mountain Rescue Team at about 12:10.

Hiking club

Shortly afterwards, the body of a man was recovered in the Jacob's Ladder area.

The party was from Leeds University Hiking Club.

An alert was raised on Sunday after one of the party became separated and was rescued by the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team.

The hiking club website said those taking part in the Cairngorms trip had arranged to attend a presentation by the mountain rescue team on Saturday.

Their group had set off from Leeds on Friday. Some of them were planning to return on Sunday evening, with the others scheduled to have an extra day's winter hiking on Monday.

The club is open to students at the university and non-students with an interest in joining its activities.

Northern Constabulary said the next of kin are informed but that no further details would released about the dead walker until other family members had been informed.
