Antarctica flight bid by Aviemore-based climber Kirk Watson

A climber and documentary film-maker based in Aviemore is to take part in a bid to set three records over Antarctica.

Kirk Watson, who is originally from Torphins in Aberdeenshire, is preparing for next year's British Antarctic Microlight Expedition.

It aims to set records for the first flexible wing flights over Antarctica, the South Pole and Mount Vinson.

Vinson is the Antarctic's highest peak at 4,892m (16,050ft).

The expedition will involve Mr Watson and wounded military personnel flying more than 3,000 miles (4,828km).

Dubbed Flying For Freedom, it is being done in partnership with the Help for Heroes charity.

Mr Watson has six years' experience working in Antarctica.

On his last trip he shot the first fictional film to be made on the continent.

South of Sanity was shot entirely in the Antarctic and the horror movie's cast and crew were made up of fellow British Antarctic Survey contractors and staff.
