A9 death crash charges not proven

A driver accused of driving dangerously and causing a 47-year-old teacher's death burst into tears after a jury came to a not proven majority verdict.

Dr Kevin Costello, a principal teacher of science at Wick High School, died when the car he was in was involved in a collision with a campervan.

Marc Combe, 61, from France, denied causing the death on the A9 in Caithness in August last year.

An alternative charge of careless driving was also not proven.

During his trial at the High Court in Inverness, the court heard allegations that Mr Combe had been on the wrong side of the road.

The crash happened on a bend in the A9 at Weydale.
