Warning over 300 tonne lorry load on Highland roads

Motorists have been warned that a 300 tonne electricity transformer will be moved over Saturday and Sunday from Invergordon to Fort Augustus.

A lorry was due to leave Invergordon at about 08:00 on Saturday and move the equipment slowly using the B817, A9, A832, A862 and A831 to Beauly.

The transformer will be kept at a quarry until midnight.

The plan is then to take it the rest of the way to a Fort Augustus substation using the A831, A862, A833 and A82.

Energy company SSE said the A82 would be closed northbound for about two hours on Sunday morning, before reopening at about 09:00.

Police said: "Because of the excessive weight of the load, it shall be very slow moving.

"Officers from Northern Constabulary will be escorting the load to ensure the safety of the travelling public and to minimise the inevitable traffic disruption."

SSE said: "We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to road users and thank you for your patience whilst this essential piece of equipment is brought to site."

For most travellers, the journey from Invergordon to Beauly takes about an hour and 20 minutes to cover 57.6 miles (92.7km).
