Chemical spill shuts Nicolson Institute in Stornoway

The £29m new Nicolson Institute opened to pupils all pupils on Friday

The largest secondary school on the Western Isles has closed early at 14:00 after a small chemical spill inside the new £29m building.

The Nicolson Institute in Stornoway, on Lewis, opened to all pupils for the first time on Friday.

Local authority Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said closing early had allowed firefighters to deal with the spill.

Two firefighters wearing protective suits checked the spill before school staff clean up the mess.

The comhairle said parents were informed of the early closure and school buses were re-scheduled to take pupils home.

The new Nicolson Institute, which opened to senior pupils on Thursday and to all age groups on Friday, replaced a school of the same name nearby.

The old school will be demolished to make way for a car park and a grass sports pitch.
