Fort William's Belford Hospital meets most HEI infection rules

Belford Hospital in Fort William complies with most national standards on controlling infections, a health watchdog has said.

The Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) has published a report following an unannounced visit by its inspectors in May.

HEI said the NHS Highland-run hospital was clean and its policies for tackling infections were up-to-date.

But it added that some precautions against bugs needed improvement.

Susan Brimelow, HEI chief inspector, said: "We found that NHS Highland is complying with the majority of healthcare associated infection standards.

"However, further improvement is required to ensure that all staff groups implement all standard infection control precautions, including the appropriate isolation of patients.

"This will ensure that the risk of the spread of infection is reduced."
