A long distance runner has completed a challenge to get from Milngavie, near Glasgow, to Portree on Skye without stopping to sleep.

Donnie Campbell, 26, set off on Saturday morning and reached Portree 44 hours and 30 minutes later.

A small fast boat took him from Mallaig to Armadale on Skye.

Mr Campbell, who is originally from the island but now lives in Glasgow, said he was "gobsmacked" by the supported he had received.

He added that he had experienced highs and lows along the 184-mile (296km) journey - the equivalent of about seven marathons.

The run raised about £6,000 for Skye Cancer Care.

In 2008, his mother and grandmother were diagnosed with cancer. Mr Campbell's grandmother later died.

The money raised will go towards efforts to launch palliative care on Skye. Inverness is the nearest place offering the care to islanders at the moment.

Mr Campbell took up ultra running three years ago.

He had previously run the West Highland Way race, also a Scottish ultra race in the Borders and run from Milngavie to Tyndrum.

Mr Campbell competed in the West Highland Way run before carrying on towards Mallaig and the crossing to Skye.
