Woman, 28, forced into lane and raped in Wishaw

A 28-year-old woman has been raped after being forced into a lane by a man in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire.

The victim was walking in the town's Caledonian Road, near Alexander Street, when she was approached by her attacker at about 00:30 on Sunday.

Following the serious sexual assault he left the lane via Caledonian Road.

The suspect is described as aged between 20 to 30 years old, about 5ft 5in/5ft 6in tall, of medium build, with dark brown hair and with dark clothing.

Police Scotland said that officers from the National Rape Taskforce were continuing inquiries and appealing for the help of the public in tracing the suspect.

Witness appeal

They are also keen to trace any witnesses, in particular two men who spoke to the victim outside Coopers Bar in Main Street, Wishaw.

Det Insp Helen Pasquale, from Police Scotland, said: "The victim is understandably obviously distressed and upset following her ordeal, and our specially trained officers are supporting her.

"I would like to appeal directly to the local community of Wishaw for information, and I would urge anyone who was in the vicinity of Caledonian Road and Alexander Street at the time of the incident to come forward.

"It is important to stress that any information, however insignificant it may seem, may assist with our investigation."

Police Scotland said extra uniformed officers would be on patrol in the area to reassure the public.
