Michael Nelson jailed for raping woman over drug debt

A man who repeatedly raped a woman in her Glasgow home over an unpaid drug debt has been jailed for seven years.

Michael Nelson was convicted of two charges of rape at the victim's flat in the Govan area on 8 October 2013.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how he had threatened the woman with violence if she did not pay the drugs debt or submit to having sex with him.

Drugs gang enforcer Nelson, 38, was caught after the woman contacted police following a 24-hour ordeal.

Jailing him, judge Lady Wolffe said: "You attended her flat uninvited, to demand payment of a drug debt said to have been owed by her to another person.

"You threatened her with certain consequences, including violence, if she did not repay this debt or submit to sex with you.

"At that time, the complainer was at a low point in her life and very vulnerable by reason of her drug abuse."

'Distressing ordeal'

The judge noted Nelson had subjected his victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, to a prolonged ordeal.

"The experience was an extremely distressing one for the complainer, taking place as it did in her own home, extending over a period of nearly 24 hours and occurring at a time when the complainer was extremely vulnerable," the judge added.

"It is to her credit that she has sought to address her drug abuse and to rebuild her life since your attack upon her.

"I am satisfied that in your case, there is no appropriate disposal to one of imprisonment."

Nelson was convicted following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

It emerged after sentencing that Nelson, a prisoner at Barlinnie, was jailed for five years in November 2008 for firearms offences.

On that occasion, the High Court in Glasgow heard how police were chasing him through Glasgow when he dropped a polythene bag containing a sawn off shotgun.

The weapon went off when a police officer picked up the bag, injuring him in the hand.
