A murder investigation has begun after a 68-year-old man was attacked at a pub in East Kilbride.

Police said he was involved in an altercation with another man at the Montgomerie Arms in Montgomery Street at about 17.45 on Sunday.

The other man then walked away from the pub. The injured man died a short time later at Hairmyres Hospital.

Det Insp Mark Henderson said a post-mortem examination would be held but the death was being treated as murder.

He added: "At this time we are trying to establish the circumstances leading up to this incident and the motive for this murder.

"Officers from the enquiry team remain in the area today carrying out their enquiries. CCTV footage from the pub and local area is also being studied.

"I would urge anyone who was in the Montgomerie Arms at the time of the incident yesterday who hasn't yet spoken to police, to contact the inquiry team as a matter of urgency as they may have details that are crucial to this investigation."
