Boy, four, critical after being hit by car in Ayr

A four-year-old boy is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a car in Ayr.

The boy was walking with his mother in the town's Barns Terrace, near to the junction with Barns Park, when he tried to cross the road at 15:05 on Monday.

He was struck by a car driven by a female driver. She was not injured but left distressed by the incident.

The boy was airlifted to Yorkhill Children's Hospital in Glasgow where he remains in a critical condition.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them.

The road was closed for a time while accident investigations were carried out by specialist officers.
