A man in his 20s has died after being hit by three cars on the M73 motorway in North Lanarkshire, police have said.

The man was walking on the southbound carriageway when he was struck by an Audi A3, a Vauxhall Vectra and a Volkswagen Scirocco.

The incident happened near Gartcosh at about 05:05. The pedestrian died at the scene.

The drivers of the cars involved were uninjured but badly shaken as a result of the incident.

Police said inquiries were at an early stage and officers were working to establish the exact details of the incident.
