Man in court after James Greer found dead in Saltcoats

A man has appeared in court charged with assault after another man was found dead in a house.

Police found the body of James Greer, 68, at a property in Barnett Crescent, in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, at about 23:55 on Sunday.

Michael Gallagher, 28, from Irvine, was charged with assault to injury when he appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

Police said Mr Greer left the Elms Bar in Raise Street at around 20:05 on Sunday night and walked in the company of two friends - a man and a woman - to a house in Barnett Crescent.

They appealed for information from anyone who saw him.
