South Lanarkshire Council is to close more than 170 posts by 2015 in a bid to balance its budget.
The authority's executive committee has approved plans to achieve targeted savings of £13.3m.
Under the plans, about 53 posts would close in community resources, about 40 in education, 41 in social work, 29 in housing and nine in corporate services.
The council has a no compulsory redundancy policy and hopes to achieve most closures through natural wastage.
Council leader Eddie McAvoy said: "Everyone knows that the global economic position remains difficult, and that means everyone is having to take tough decisions - whether they be in family and household budgets, or local and national government budgets.
"But we are doing everything possible to protect our essential frontline services here in South Lanarkshire.
"That's the instruction I gave council officers as they drew up the proposals which have now been approved by the executive committee."
