Games baton The Commonwealth Games will take place in July and August of next year

Glasgow City Council is to give 6,000 Commonwealth Games tickets to children, community groups and over 60s.

Selection will begin in March 2014. Success applicants will be told in May and get their tickets in June 2014.

Education services will aim to reward "inspirational children". Social work will offers tickets to children and older adults supported by the council.

Glasgow Life will target sports groups and volunteers. Local communities will also receive a set number of tickets.

The council said it would use "a number of strict criteria" to ensure fairness.

The tickets, which have a total value of about £90,000, are for events taking place in Glasgow, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

'Priceless memory'

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson said: "I am pleased that the council has decided to allocate these tickets to both some of our most vulnerable people and some of those who contribute to the fantastic sporting life of the city.

"What has been at the centre of all our planning is not only making 2014 the greatest ever Commonwealth Games, but making sure we leave a legacy that includes everyone in Glasgow.

"The people who receive tickets through this project will have a priceless memory of what will be an unforgettable time in our history and an inspiration for us in the future."
