'Despicable' Leslie Low jailed for abusing children

A man who admitted sexually abusing a young boy and girl has been jailed for six years and five months.

Leslie Low, 59, began sexually and physically abusing the boy when he was aged nine. The attacks happened between 1997 and 2003 in Glasgow and Girvan.

He also attempted to rape the girl once in Girvan when she was six years old.

At the High Court in Glasgow, temporary judge Sean Murphy QC described Low as "despicable". Low will be monitored for two years after his release.

'Cruel and degrading'

Jailing Low, judge Murphy told him: "You have committed appalling and despicable crimes.

"You abused this boy in a shameful manner for your own sexual gratification. Your treatment of him was cruel and degrading.

"You also abused a young girl on one occasion."

Judge Murphy told Low he would have jailed him for eight years, but for his early guilty plea.

The court heard how Low grabbed the boy by the throat and then abused him while saying: "Shush, it will be alright."

The young victim was told to keep the abuse a secret and when he was interviewed by police and asked how many times he was abused he said: "Too many to count."

The boy, who is now in his 20s, said that he felt helpless during the years of abuse.

The court was told that both of Low's victims had been left traumatised by what he did to them.
