Fighter jet escorts plane to Prestwick Airport

A military fighter jet was scrambled to escort a plane to Prestwick Airport after it temporarily lost contact with air traffic control over Scotland.

The Scandinavian Airlines flight from Copenhagen to Birmingham, with 72 passengers on board, experienced problems at about 09:30 on Thursday.

Following protocol, it was escorted to Prestwick by military jet.

The plane was met by emergency services and cleared to fly after inspection. It is due to resume its journey shortly.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said it had been alerted to an incident involving an aircraft which had lost communications for "a short period of time".

"Communication was soon regained and the aircraft has now landed safely," she added.
