A murder inquiry has been launched after a 21-year-old man died following an attack in Glasgow on Hogmanay.

Emergency services were called to the Springburn area after reports that a man had been assaulted in Petershill Road, near the fire station, at 22:30.

The victim was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he died. A post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Police, who have launched an appeal for witnesses, said the man may have been chased following a disturbance nearby.

Officers are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area and gathering CCTV footage from the area.

They are also keen to speak to an elderly couple who were walking their dog in the area at the time.

Det Supt Kenny Dewar said: "A young man has lost his life and one family is beginning this New Year in extremely sad circumstances.

"I am appealing to local residents who may have seen or heard anything in connection with this incident - in particular the elderly man and woman, who were out walking their dog.

"They may have seen something or have information which could assist our investigation and I am asking them to please get in touch with us."
