An investigation has been launched after a 77-year-old woman died in a fire at flats in East Kilbride.

The blaze broke out at about 06:30 in a ground floor property in Glen Moy, St Leonards.

Eight other residents were led to safety and three were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue station commander Jim Anderson said crews worked "in thick smoke and extreme heat" as they tackeld the fire.

"Four firefighters donned breathing apparatus and entered the burning flat, with two hose reel jets to search for the occupant and extinguish the fire," he explained.

"Very quickly found the body of a person inside, who was sadly confirmed as a fatality."
