A 38-year-old man has been detained by police, following the death of a 63-year-old woman in a house in Troon, Ayrshire.

Police have described the attack on a 64-year-old man, injured in the same incident, as attempted murder.

Officers were called to the town's Polo Gardens at 19:45 on Friday.

The woman has been named locally as Ann Morris. Her 64-year-old husband Fred sustained serious head and chest injuries.

The couple were taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock, where Mrs Morris later died.

The 38-year-old man was taken into police custody in London. Officers from Strathclyde have been sent to London to escort him back to Scotland.

Officers remained at the scene on Saturday morning. A post mortem is due to be carried out to establish how Mrs Morris died.

Hospital staff said her husband remains in a "serious but stable" condition.
