Shawlands Academy lights display herald town centre revamp

Shawlands Academy The display will appear on Shawlands Academy from Wednesday night

A lighting and animation display is to be projected on to a Glasgow school as part of a wider effort to attract more shoppers and night-time revellers.

The feature will appear on the front of Shawlands Academy from Wednesday night.

Pupils at the school worked on the display to help transform the street into a "welcoming gateway to the town".

The Shawlands Gate project is part of council-led moves to regenerate the town centre as "the heart of Glasgow's south side".

'Important hub'

Earlier this year, Glasgow City Council committed £3.3m to help deliver some improvement measures for the area.

Councillor Archie Graham, chair of Shawlands Town Centre steering group, said: "The Shawlands Gate project is a great example of what a local school and community can do to improve their area.

"The lighting display transforms what had previously been a fairly dark street into a welcoming gateway into the centre of Shawlands, one of the most important hubs in Glasgow's south side.

"I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the project for their fantastic work."
