Murder bid probe after man shot near Wishaw train station

A man is recovering in hospital after being shot near a railway station.

Police said the victim, 28, phoned his friend from close to Wishaw train station in North Lanarkshire at about 18:00 on Sunday and told him he had been shot.

Emergency services were called and he was taken to hospital to be treated for a suspected gunshot wound.

Detectives are treating the incident as attempted murder and said they did not believe it was a random attack.

The man was taken to Wishaw General Hospital and then transferred to another hospital. His condition was described as stable.

There were no descriptions of any suspects.

Det Insp John Lamb of Strathclyde Police said: "We are at a very early stage in the inquiry but I would like to reassure the public that we do not believe this was a random attack.

"It is not clear how the man came about his injuries, other than what he told his friend on the phone and I am seeking the assistance of the public to find out what happened.

"Where you near to Wishaw Railway Station on Sunday night around 1800 hours and saw anyone acting suspiciously? Did you see or hear a car leave the area at speed? Did you notice anything out of the ordinary around the Railway Station on Sunday evening?"

The detective said the area around the station would normally be fairly quiet at that time on a Sunday evening but he said someone may have seen or heard something which could help officers find out what happened to the man and how he came about his injuries.
