Scotland's largest transport authority has approved an across-the-board 9% rise in fares on Glasgow's Subway.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport increased an adult single from £1.20 to £1.40 - an rise of almost 17%.

A 10-journey ticket goes up from £11 to £12 - a rise of 9%. The cost of a seven-day ticket goes up from £15 to £16 - a rise of about 7%.

SPT said fares had been "static for the last three years" and the service was not immune from tough financial times.

SPT chief executive Gordon Maclennan said: "Subway fares have remained static for the last three years.

"Over the same period, rail and bus prices have risen by 12% - the new subway fares, which reflect an annual 2.3% increase during that time, is well below that.

"One of our key aims is to reduce subsidy whilst keeping fares affordable. We believe that the Subway is still one of the cheapest and most efficient ways to travel."
