New wind farm for Galawhistle in East Ayrshire wins approval

The Galawhistle wind farm could power up to 30,000 homes

Planning approval has been given for a new 22-turbine wind farm at Galawhistle in East Ayrshire.

Energy Minister Fergus Ewing gave the go-ahead for the scheme, which lies 7km east of Muirkirk, East Ayrshire, and 4km west of Douglas, South Lanarkshire.

Once operational, it will be capable of generating up to 55 MW of electricity - enough to power 30,00 homes.

Developer Infinis believes that between 17 and 34 jobs could be created during construction.

It is also thought that the wind farm could generate £2.7m for the local economy during its 25 years of operation.

'Great benefits'

Mr Ewing said: "The Galawhistle site will represent a significant boost to the local economy and create jobs during construction.

"Once it is up and running the wind farm will save thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, and will produce enough electricity to power more than 30,000 homes.

"I am confident that Galawhistle will provide great benefits to its local community and play an important part in helping Scotland reach its target of the equivalent of 100% of electricity demand generated from renewables."

Two objections to the wind farm were made by members of the public.

It was given government approval after being supported by South Lanarkshire Council and East Ayrshire Council.
