Sex attack teacher David Morrissey struck off register

A South Lanarkshire teacher has been struck off the professional register after being convicted of a sex attack, drink-driving and breaching bail terms.

David Morrissey, formerly called David Hatcher, was convicted of the offences during two appearances at Hamilton Sheriff Court last year.

The General Teaching Council (GTC) said the seriousness of the convictions merited Morrissey being struck off.

The 48-year-old was dismissed by South Lanarkshire Council last year.

The GTC fitness to teach panel considered the former science teacher's case in Edinburgh on Monday.

'Ravish' threat

It noted that in April last year, he had been convicted of threatening and abusive behaviour towards two women, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in February 2010.

The same month, he was also caught drink-driving in the North Lanarkshire area.

He was also convicted of sexually assaulting a woman at an address in Wishaw in March 2010, during which he threatened to "ravish her".

Morrissey was convicted of breaching bail conditions imposed after the attack by contacting the woman in August 2010.

The GTC panel also noted that he appeared again at Hamilton Sheriff Court in October last year and was convicted of stealing a driving licence from an address in Wishaw.

It found that Morrissey's conduct fell short "of the standards expected of a registered teacher and that his fitness to teach" was "impaired".

The panel said that "to issue a reprimand would not be appropriate" and that "accordingly, in view of the seriousness of the convictions, the panel found that it had no option but to order the registrar to remove the respondent's (Morrissey's) name from the register".
