Fullerton Street, Ayr The girl died after falling from a building in Fullerton Street in Ayr

A teenage girl has died after falling from the roof of a building in Ayr.

Emergency services were called to reports that the 15-year-old had fallen from a building in the town's Fullerton Street at about 23:40 on Wednesday.

The girl, named locally as Kayleigh Scott, was taken to Ayr Hospital where she died from her injuries.

Strathclyde Police said an inquiry was under way into the circumstances surrounding the girl's death.

She is understood to have been a pupil of the town's Belmont Academy.

The school's headmaster, Alan Moir, said: "I was devastated to learn of the tragic death of our pupil this morning and our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this difficult time.

"Due to the summer holidays, it's not possible to bring everyone together as we would normally do in such tragic circumstances but we're doing everything we can to contact friends from the school to offer them support, someone to talk to or a shoulder to cry on.

"We're a very close school community in Belmont and, in time, we'll consider how we want to remember her as a part of our school community but today our focus is on those affected by this tragic news and doing what we can to help and support them."
