Martin Olej and Iain Starrett to stand trial over John McCulloch murder

Two men are to stand trial charged with the murder of a pensioner after a fire at his home almost three years ago.

Martin Olej and Iain Starrett, both aged 21, are accused of killing John McCulloch, 69, at his home in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, on 14 August 2009.

It is alleged Mr McCulloch was attacked and left unconscious. Both accused are then alleged to set fire to his home.

Mr Olej and Mr Starrett deny the charges. At the High Court in Glasgow, trial was set for January 2013.

Mr Olej also faces a charge that he stole various items including jewellery, a pack of playing cards, DVDs and a sum of cash.
