A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of an elderly woman at her home in Lanarkshire.

Mary Coulter, 76, was found with two broken arms and serious head and facial injuries at her home in Overtown near Wishaw in March.

Darryl Finnie, 27, from Carluke, made no plea on declaration when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He was remanded in custody. Police have also asked prosecutors to consider bringing charges against another man.

The 28-year-old is subject of a report to the procurator fiscal in connection with the attack.

Mrs Coulter is the mother and grandmother of two men cleared of the murder of Asian waiter, Surjit Singh Chhokar, in 1998.

At a press conference in March, Mrs Coulter's daughter Helen Coulter described her mother as a "defenceless elderly woman" who never hurt anyone.
