Bail wait for Phillip Cottrell murder accused Nicho Waipuka

One of two teenagers accused of murdering a British journalist in New Zealand is to spend at least two more weeks in custody.

Nicho Waipuka, 19, who has been charged with murdering Phillip Cottrell, had been due to apply for bail at Wellington District Court.

His application was postponed until 15 February, a court spokeswoman said.

Mr Cottrell, 43, died after a suspected street attack on 10 December after leaving work at Radio New Zealand.

Mr Waipuka's co-accused Manuel Robinson, 17, was previously released on bail.

Meanwhile, police are still trying to track down a man who handed Mr Cottrell's credit card to staff at a bar after finding it at Wellington railway station on 10 December.

They stressed the man was not connected to the investigation, but were still keen to speak to him.

Mr Cottrell died after a suspected street attack on 10 December after leaving work at Radio New Zealand.

It is believed that he was assaulted minutes after leaving the independent station where he worked as a news editor.

He was found unconscious by a taxi driver outside a Baptist Church on Boulcott Street in Wellington at about 05:30 on 10 December.

Mr Cottrell died the following day in hospital.

The 43-year-old had worked for BBC Scotland in Glasgow before settling in New Zealand.
