Flats evacuated in Glasgow after subsidence alert

The alert was raised after "movement" was reported in the building

A block of flats has been evacuated in the east end of Glasgow because of fears that the building was subsiding.

Residents have been moved from the four-storey tenement on London Road and a shop on the ground floor has been closed.

The alert was raised after "movement" was reported in the building about 12:00 on Friday.

Glasgow City Council said building contractors are working to make the property safe.

London Road has been closed between Abercromby Street and Bridgeton Cross while the condition of the building is investigated.

A spokesman for the council said: "An unsafe building has sparked the evacuation of eight flats and a shop in Glasgow's East End.

"The unsafe property at 594 London Road, Glasgow, is a four storey tenement and the concerns centre around movement in the building.

"It is feared that the top floor flat may be unstable."
