Glasgow subway to be closed on strike day

A strike on public sector pension reform could see a delay in hospital operations and many schools closed

Transport authority SPT has said it will be forced to close Glasgow underground on 30 November because of a strike by public sector workers.

About two million people are expected to take part in a day of strike action in protest at the UK government's plans to reform public sector pensions.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport said it did not know how many of its staff would turn up for work.

SPT said it would be closing the subway network for safety reasons.

Gordon Maclennan, SPT chief executive said: "This is incredibly disappointing as many thousands of our customers depend on the system every day.

"They have been very patient while the modernisation work is ongoing at Hillhead station and we hope that patience won't be stretched too far with this closure.

"We do hope to operate Buchanan Street, Hamilton, East Kilbride and Greenock bus stations and travel centres on the day and it is likely that our MyBus service will run as usual."
