Woman dead after fire at flat in Irvine
A fire which claimed a woman's life at a flat in North Ayrshire is not being treated as suspicious, police said.
Emergency services were called to the flat, above a shop in High Street, Irvine, at 05:42 on Thursday.
Fire crews brought the woman from the property, but she later died at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue are investigating the cause of the blaze. Part of High Street has been closed, with diversions in place.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said crews from Kilmarnock, Kilwinning and Dreghorn were called to tackle the blaze.
When they arrived at the scene they found a "severe fire" with heavy smoke coming from the flat.
Crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and started search and rescue operations.
The fire was brought under control after the woman had been taken from the building.
