Characters real and fictional from Tommy Sheridan trial

Characters mentioned in Sheridan trial A number of characters - real and imagined - were mentioned in the Sheridan trial

The Tommy Sheridan perjury trial saw some of the most colourful exchanges ever to feature in a Scottish court.

During evidence at the High Court in Glasgow the former MSP was compared by witnesses to a number of real and fictional characters.

In most cases, the comparisons were less than flattering with the ex-Scottish Socialist leader being portrayed as a fantasist and liar.

Here, BBC News Online Scotland looks at some of the characters mentioned.

CARTMAN FROM SOUTH PARK

"In the 24 years I have known you, I have only heard you say f*** a number of times. This makes you sound like Cartman from South Park." Steve Arnott, former regional organiser for the Scottish Socialist Party in the Highlands, gives his opinion on a secret video in which Mr Sheridan was alleged to have admitted visiting a swingers club.

DANIEL O'DONNELL

"He had presented himself quite deliberately and consciously as a very squeaky-clean politician, who constantly referred to his relationship with Gail, and who was seen, I think, as almost the Daniel O'Donnell of Scottish politics, somebody who was very, very clean." Alan McCombes, former press officer of the Scottish Socialist Party.

HARRY POTTER

"JK Rowling could not make up the kind of stories you have made up. It is Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings combined, Tommy." Alan McCombes, former press officer of the Scottish Socialist Party responds to Mr Sheridan's cross examination.

HUGH GRANT AND DAVID BECKHAM

"You could have done a Hugh Grant and put your hands up to it, and people would have respected you for that. David Beckham was the other - to just ignore it, don't do anything. Jeffrey Archer would have been a worst case scenario." Rosie Kane, former Scottish Socialist Party MSP, responds to Mr Sheridan's cross examination.

JEFFREY ARCHER

"What troubled me more was his intention to go down the same route as the infamous Jeffrey Archer in claiming the truth was lies and the lies were truth." Allan Green, former national secretary of the Scottish Socialist Party.

JEREMY PAXMAN

"This is not Newsnight and you are not Jeremy Paxman, Tommy." Alan McCombes, former press officer of the Scottish Socialist Party responds to Mr Sheridan's cross-examination.

OJ SIMPSON

"It definitely felt like that to me when I saw the outcome of this trial (Tommy Sheridan's defamation trial). It was a bit like hearing that OJ was declared innocent. It was a bit of a shock." Elizabeth Quinn, retired head teacher, describes her reaction on hearing that Mr Sheridan had won his defamation case in 2006.

RORY BREMNER

"That's nonsense - neither did I hire Rory Bremner to do your voice, Tommy. I did not write a script. That is another false and scurrilous accusation." Alan McCombes, former press officer of the Scottish Socialist Party, responds to Mr Sheridan's cross-examination.

TOM AND JERRY

"It was not showing Tom and Jerry on the TVs." Gary Clark, a childhood friend of Mr Sheridan's described what he allegedly saw on TV screens in a Manchester sex club.
