Man arrested after Glasgow 'grenade siege'

Armed police were at the scene of the incident in the west end of the city

A 22-year-old man has been arrested after an eight-hour police siege at a flat in the west end of Glasgow.

Police were called to Dumbarton Road at 0730 BST after reports that a man had barricaded himself inside following a domestic incident.

The road was closed in both directions as armed police, bomb disposal experts and negotiators arrived on scene.

The man was detained and is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

A report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.

During the incident it was reported that grenade-type devices had been thrown from the flat.

It is believed that the man was involved in an alleged disturbance with a woman at the flat.

Several devices were visible on the pavement of Dumbarton Road

Up to three devices, resembling stun grenades or flares, were visible on Dumbarton Road, where a massive police cordon is in place.

At least 10 armed officers with riot shields and battering rams were seen entering the building during the afternoon.

One police officer was also viewed using a telescopic camera to look into the property from a flat above.

The road was closed between Crow Road and Apsley Street and armed officers were escorting locals away from the scene.

During the incident, large crowds gathered at both ends of the cordon and several police cars were parked in the middle of the road.

BBC Scotland reporter Laura Bicker said armed officers had trained their weapons on the second-floor flat.

No-one has been reported injured during the incident. Fire crews and ambulances were also at the scene.
