An investigation has been launched after Edinburgh Airport had to close its runway following a crash between two vehicles.

The vehicles had been driving to check the runway, after a plane had reported a bird strike, when they crashed.

The runway was closed between 08:15 and 08:40.

A BA flight from Gatwick had to divert to Glasgow while an Edelweiss Air flight was delayed for 10 minutes.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman, said: "We can confirm that two airport vehicles were involved in a collision.

"The vehicles were going out onto the runway to ensure it was safe for approaching aircraft following a previous aircraft reporting a possible bird strike on landing.

"As a result our runway was closed for a short period of time and has now reopened. An investigation is now under way."
