Police are appealing for witnesses after a horse was stabbed in the shoulder with a metal spike in Midlothian

The attack happened sometime between 21:45 on Thursday and 09:30 on Friday at Gowkshill Farm in Gorebridge.

The horse needed an operation and is now recovering.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "This was a sickening and mindless act of violence on a defenceless animal."

    Dr Peter Bennie, chairman of the BMA in Scotland, said the health service must learn from past "mistakes and missed opportunities".

    He said there had been huge reliance on the goodwill of staff, but that this was not a sustainable solution.

    The Scottish government said it agreed that the way health and social care is delivered in Scotland must change.
