Investigations are continuing after two elderly brothers were found dead at a house in an apparent double suicide.

Police were called to a property in Lockerby Cottages in the Gracemount area of Edinburgh at about 17:00 on Thursday.

Officers launched a major response but said they were not looking for anyone in connection with the deaths.

The brothers were named locally as John McIlwain, 71, and Robert McIlwain, 73.

A police helicopter was involved and there were road closures in the area south of the capital.

Police Scotland said: "Police in Edinburgh attended a property in Lockerby Cottages near Gracemount at around 5pm.

"On gaining entry, two elderly men were found seriously injured and were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Inquiries are continuing but police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."

The area was still cordoned off on Friday.

Parts of Lasswade Road and other routes were shut on Thursday, causing rush-hour delays.
