An 18-year-old student has been indecently assaulted while walking on university grounds in Fife.

The woman was on her own in the grounds of St Andrews University at about 01:00 on Thursday when she was attacked by a man.

The incident happened on a lane between the university sports hall and the David Russell apartments.

The woman was uninjured but "extremely shaken" by the incident. Police are appealing for witnesses.

The man was described as being 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins tall and was wearing a dark puffa jacket, dark tracksuit bottoms, grey beanie hat and possibly gloves.

Rare attack

The woman had been in the centre of St Andrews with friends before the incident.

Ch Insp Adrian Annandale said: "This type of incident is rare and it is not known what the man's motive was, however, the victim was very shaken by it.

"I would take this opportunity to remind the public when they are in more remote areas to be aware of their personal safety."

A St Andrews University spokeswoman said: "We are liaising with police, offering appropriate support to the student involved, and are relieved that she was unharmed."
