The animal charity Scottish SPCA has started an investigation into how a dog came to be dumped in a communal bin in Portobello, Edinburgh, on 1 January.
The Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed was found in a large bin in the city suburb's King's Road.
The dog's owner was reported to be "horrified" by the incident, although the animal was not injured.
The charity has appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information on the incident, to contact them.
Ch Insp Paul Anderson of the charity said: "Thankfully the dog hadn't sustained any injuries and we were able to identify the owner and return him home.
"His owner was understandably horrified and we are very keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed this incident.
"We are asking people in the area to cast their minds back to New Year's Day and to call our animal helpline on 03000 999 999 if they remember seeing the dog or anyone acting suspiciously."
