Man released in Edinburgh new year sex attack inquiry

A man arrested in connection with a serious sexual assault during new year celebrations in Edinburgh has been released from custody pending further investigation.

A 21-year-old woman was attacked in the Canongate area of the Old Town between midnight and 02:30 on 1 January.

Police Scotland said a 25-year-old man had been charged and was expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

The Crown Office later said he did not appear.

A Crown Office spokesman said: "The procurator fiscal at Edinburgh received a report concerning a 25-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident on 1 January 2014.

"After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the report, the accused was liberated from custody pending further investigation and did not appear in court."
